Varsity Lions victorious over Hawks

The Lockhart Lion varsity basketball team pulled out a close victory against the Pflugerville Hendrickson Hawks on Friday, Jan. 14, with the help of junior forward Mark Black”s 31 points.
The Lions started the game off slow with the Hawks outscoring them 18-4 in the first quarter.
However, Lockhart”s intensity improved as t
hey stepped on the court for the second quarter.
The Lions improved offensively and defensively by only allowing Hendrickson to score nine points to their 20 points.
At halftime, the Lions only trailed 24-27 against the Hawks.
The halftime break seemed to have given the Lions the rest they need. In the third quarter, Lockhart came back to the game with enthusiasm. They took over the lead by the top of the fourth quarter, with a nine-point advantage over the Hawks.
Hendrickson fought hard for the win by outscoring the Lions 24-19 in the last quarter.
Time was on Lockhart”s side as the buzzer signaled the end of the game giving Lockhart the 66-62 victory over Hendrickson.
Contributing to the Lion”s 66-point win was double-digit scorers Black and senior guard Jacob Alvarez with 19 points. Alvarez also grabbed ten rebounds, three steals and completed five assists.
Also adding points to the scoreboard were Lions Jonathan Sanders with six points, Garrett Shafer with four points, and Michael Spears with four points.
Spears and Shafer pulled down six and five rebounds respectively.
Contributing offensively with assist were Shafer with 12 and Alvarez with five.
On defense, the Lions forced fourteen turnovers with Sanders making four steals, Shafer making three steals and Alvarez made three steals.
Lockhart was forced to go the free-throw line by the Hawks, but they kept their composure at the line. The Lions averaged 57.7 percent overall averaged between Mark Black having 76.9 percent and Alvarez completing 55.6 percent from the line
The Lions will next host Elgin at the Lions” Den on Friday, Jan. 21, at 5:30, 6:45 and 8 p.m.
