Lions grapple, fall 103-49 to Austin Travis Rebels
The Lockhart Lions opened up their home schedule before the holiday by hosting the Austin Travis Rebels. In a fast-paced game, the Lions were pressured throughout the game by a very athletic Rebel lineup, which enabled Travis to come away with a big 103-49 victory.
The full court pressure defense of the Rebels along with numerous Lion turnovers resulted in a 12-point
first-quarter lead for Travis.
The lead doubled in the second quarter of play to 52-28.
The Lions showed signs of improvement early in the third quarter cutting into the lead, but the Rebels responded with a run of their own extending their lead 80-45.
In the final quarter of play the Lions could only manage four points and Travis kept up their intensity scoring 23.
“When we took care of the ball and made good decisions, we were able to get easy buckets,” coach Glenn Rotzler said.
The Lions were led by Joseph Gonzales who had 21 points and three rebounds; Dustin Watkins with eight points and eight rebounds; and Sergio Juarez with eight points and four rebounds. It is early in the season and Lions plan to take full advantage of their time in practice and games to prepare for a rematch with the Rebels in January, Rotzler also said.
The Lions hosted the Canyon Lake Hawks on Tuesday, Dec. 1. They will travel to Seguin to participate in the Matador Classic over the weekend, and then face New Braunfels Canyon on the road on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
