Lion lifters host meet to open season
Lady Lions dominate in first-ever girls’ division competition
The 2010 Lockhart Lion Powerlifting Meet was held on Jan. 9, 2010, at the High School. This year’s meet featured a girls division for the very first time.
“Lockhart has for many years hosted a boys’ meet and we felt like it would be a great addition to include the girls’ divisi
on as well,” Coach Donald Purdy said.
The Lady Lions had two lifters in the inaugural meet. Jocelyn Coleman won first place in her division with a total of 545 pounds lifted on her three lifts (squat, bench press and dead lift). Victoria Brite totaled 445 pounds, and finished third in her class. Brite was also named best female lifter in the 165-lb. and under category.
The Lions finished in second place overall and were lead by three first-place finishes in their weight classes.
Dominique Hardaway, Lawrence Brite and Dion Turner each won their divisions. Hardaway and Brite each set records with their lifts. Hardaway set records in each of his three lifts and his overall total of 1465 pounds. Lawrence Brite set the bench press record at 380 pounds.
First place in the team awards went to Del Valle in the girls’ division and Dripping Springs in the boys’ division.
The Lions have four meets remaining until the regional meet on March 6, with the boys competing in Dripping Springs and the girls in Elgin. The regional meet qualifiers are the top 10 lifters in each weight class in the region.
“Powerlifting is unique in that freshmen through seniors all compete together,” Purdy said. “There are no separate divisions based on age, only on weight classification. We had several freshmen competing this week and hope to increase with each week.”
