Lady Lions devour Mustangs, skin Rattlers for Spring Break
Even though Lockhart High was out for spring break the Lady Lion softball team was on a mission to remain undefeated in the first round of district play. The Lady Lions were either practicing or playing games throughout their entire spring break and it definitely paid off when the team walked away with two more district wins last week.
On March 17, the Lady Lions had
the “luck of the Irish” on their side as they run-ruled the Manor Mustangs 10-0 in five complete innings.
Jamie Schulle helped the Lions score in the first with a single into leftfield that scored Brandy Stacks. Although it was a slow moving game, Lockhart was able to add nine more runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. To close out the game and put the run rule into effect was freshman pinch hitter Amber Hazelett who hit a deep ball into left-centerfield to grab the two winning RBIs. Pitching a one-hitter for the Lady Lions was Schulle, a senior, who struck out seven Mustangs from the circle.
Hitting stats include: Stacks (1 -1); Schulle (2-4 with a triple); Taylor Rives (3-4); A. Hazelett (1-1); Morgan Rives (2-3 with a double); Mikaela Flores (2-3); Chelsea Capello (2-3); and Mackinzee Griebel with a single.
On Friday, March 19, the Lady Lions traveled to San Marcos to take on the Rattlers.
After losing several key players from last season, the Rattlers were off to a rough district start, but those circumstances didn’t hinder their level of play Friday night.
San Marcos scored first, but the Lady Lions tied the game 1-1 on T. Rives’ double, which scored Griebel, who had reached base on an error.
Lockhart added five more runs in the fourth, with M. Rives leading the rally with a double, followed by Stacks with a line-drive triple to burn the Rattlers leftfielder, scoring two Lady Lions and bringing the score to 3-1.
Schulle added a single, while T. Rives racked up another RBI double. By the end of the fourth, the score was 6-1 Lockhart.
The Rattlers, hunting for a win, came back to add three runs of their own in the fourth, and one in the fifth finishing the score at 6-5.
Although the Lady Lions’ bats went dead, they still had to fight defensively to hold off the Rattlers. Lockhart was able to pull through with the 6-5 victory.
Pitching duties were shared for the Lady Lions, with T. Rives completing five innings and Schulle finishing the last two. T. Rives secured the win, while Schulle tallies a save. The Lady Lions faced Del Valle at home on Tuesday and will travel to compete with district rival Elgin Wildcats on Friday, March 26.
