Just in time for spring cleaning, the City of Lockhart has scheduled two major trash collection events in an effort to help residents beautify not only their homes, but the community.

Beginning on April 7, the City of Lockhart will work in connection with Central Texas Refuse to host five major trash collection events:

four extensive curbside collections and one Household Hazardous Waste Disposal event.

Each Wednesday in April, residents will be given the chance to have their large household trash items, including mattresses, furniture and other large items, collected at curbside with no extra collection costs.

These collection events, designed to help City of Lockhart customers dispose of bulky trash items, will not replace normal trash collection, which will continue for residential and commercial customers as scheduled.

Trash collection will take place as follows (see inset map):
April 7 – Customers west of Highway 183 and north of San Antonio Street;
April 14 – Customers east of Highway 183 and north of Rosewood Street;
April 21 – Customers west of Highway 183 and south of San Antonio Street; and
April 28 – Customers east of Highway 183 and south of Rosewood Street.

During this special collection event, commercial trash and standard residential trash will not be collected. Additionally, customers are asked not to include paints, varnishes or other chemicals, tires, batteries or lumber measuring more than five feet long. Instead a special Household Hazardous Waste collection event will address these items.

As with normal trash collection, customers should have items to be collected placed at the curb before 8 a.m. on their scheduled collection date. Appliances, metal and furniture must be stacked separately, and loose items should be in containers or bags weighing no more than 60 pounds.

On April 10, the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection event will give residents the chance to purge paints, varnishes, tires and batteries that are no longer useful.

From 9 a.m. – noon, the City of Lockhart will provide dumpsters at Lockhart City Hall for customers to bring cleaning products, degreasers, pool chemicals and the like for safe, free disposal.

Customers should note, however, that containers larger than five gallons, medical waste, sharps, compressed gas containers, metal and gun powder are among items that will not be accepted.

For the safety not only of customers, but of the staff and volunteers manning the collection, customers are reminded not to mix chemicals, and to make sure that chemical containers are sealed and labeled correctly. If a customer does not know what a container holds, it should be marked “unknown.”

Additional information about these collection events is available on the City of Lockhart”s website at www.lockhart-tx.org, or can be obtained by calling Lockhart City Hall at (512) 398-3461.
