Lions’ 8th graders sweep Gonzales

Lockhart Junior High’s 8th grade football teams dominated Gonzales last week, whipping the Apaches, 27-6, in the Maroon (A) game, and 33-0 in the White (B) contest.

Quarterback Demonte Anthony led the Maroon Lions with 149 yards rushing – 109 in the first half – including passing for two touchdowns, running for a TD, and adding two extra-point runs and another via the pass.

8th Grade A Game

Receiver Joel Garcia hauled in both touchdown receptions for LJH and also rushed for a touchdown.

Lockhart took just four plays to score on is first possession of the first quarter, the final 5 on a Anthony to Garcia pass. Anthony ran in the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 2:45 left in the period.

The Lions put the game away with a pair of second quarter scores. The first came on another Anthony to Garcia pass, this one from 8 yards out. Anthony then bulled his way in for the extra point and a 14-0 LJH lead with 4:04 left in the half.

After taking over possession again by stopping Gonzales on downs, the Lions used just two plays to score again, this time on a 27-yard juke-and-jive run by Anthony with 1:26 left in intermission. The pass for the extra point failed with Lockhart leading 20-0.

Lockhart didn’t slow down, driving 67 yards in just 6 plays to open the second half, scoring on Garcia’s 4-yard jet sweep to pay dirt. Anthony’s pass to Wyatt Reed completed the extra point and a 27-0 lead.

Gonzales avoided the shutout with a 2-yard run by #22 with 5:09 remaining.

8th Grade B Game

A scoreless first period was highlighted by a 28-yard pass from Christopher Cathey to Nathan Campos down to the Gonzales 1. D’Marques Hill Cubit took it in from there on the first play of the second quarter. Julian Quintanilla ran in the extra point for a 7-0 Lockhart lead.

Lockhart drove 69 yards for its second score, including a 4th-and-5 conversion when Hill Cubit scampered 11 yards. Cathey went the final 7 yards for a score when he bounced off a Gonzales defender and raced to the end zone. Hill Cubit ran in the extra point for a 14-0 lead.

The Lions made it two touchdowns in two plays when Alexander Alviter Gutierrez returned the opening kickoff of the third quarter 68 yards for a touchdown. Alviter Gutierrez grabbed the kickoff on the right side of the field, raced all the way across and tip-toed the sideline for the score. The run for the extra point failed, but with 6:35 left in the period, LJH led 20-0.

Jose Mondragon Gutierrez cashed in with a 5-yard sprint to the right corner of the field for a touchdown on the final play of the third quarter. Cathey picked up a low snap on the extra point attempt and scored anyway for a 27-0 LJH lead.

Eli Gonzalez appeared to have scored on a 27-yard run, but a Lockhart penalty erased the play. Nevertheless, the Lions scored on the game’s final play when Cathey connected with Alviter Gutierrez, who did most of the work as he scored from 33 yards out. The run for two failed, leaving the final margin at 33-0.

Eight different Lions carried the ball, led by Quintanilla’s 35 yards on 3 attempts.

Cathey was 5-of-7 passing for 77 yards, with Alviter Gutierrez catching the TD for 33 yards.

7th Grade A Game

Gonzales turned the tables by sweeping Lockhart in both 7th grade contests.

The Apaches won the A game, 42-13.

Jesse Guerra and Wesley Rempel were credited with strong games for the Lions.

Gonzales won the B game, 27-0. Kenneth Nunez had a s strong outing for Lockhart.

UP NEXT

Unbeaten La Vernia visited Lockhart’s 8th graders Tuesday, while te Lions’ 7th graders traveled to La Vernia.

On Oct. 8, the LJH 8th graders travel to Seguin to play AJB Middle School, with AJB visiting Lockhart in 7th grade action.
