Lady Lions’ Cross-Country runners bring home some Gold at Shiner Comanche

SHINER — The Lockhart Lady Lions traveled to Shiner and came home with two titles and one individual title last weekend. LHS won in the team standings for both the 5A-6A 5k Division and the JV Division, as well as having the overall individual winner with Addison Harrod.
In the 5A-6A Varsity division, sophomore Harrod once again took home top honors and placed 1st overall over the 3.1-mile course with a time of 22:09. It was Harrod’s second victory in two weeks, but more impressive was her time which puts her in the mix for a regional qualifying spot in two weeks at district.

Trailing Harrod was freshman Alicia Sanchez, who perhaps had her best race of the season. Sanchez placed 2nd overall with a season best time of 24:26, which placed her seconds ahead of senior teammate Beth Key (24:56/3rd).

The Lion pride came roaring in with freshman Pyper Bornemann (26:53/4th) and sophomore Dayana Delgado (27:00/5th). Bornemann and Delgado both ran season bests at the race. Rounding out the varsity squad for the Lady Lions was freshman Sophia Rodriguez (27:23/6th) and junior Classrissa Martinez-Olvera (28:06/7th) who finished as pushers.

“This was an important race today,” said LHS Head Girls Coach Reuben Ortiz. “This was the last race before district and we needed that last 5k race to prepare. Racing a 5k today like they did definitely helps, and some ladies went after it today. It made my day.”
In the JV division, sophomore Katherine Silva-Garcia used one of her strongest performances of the season to lead the Lions to a 1st place team finish. Silva-Garcia placed 11th overall with a time of 16:48 over the 2-mile course. Sophomore newcomer Tania Garcia-Vega (19:21/13th) came in next for the lady lions. This was Garcia-Vega’s first race of the season and helped her new team in a big way.

Up next for the Lady Lions were the batting freshman duo of Marlie Stephens (19:52/17th) and Jayla Madrid-Hernandez (19:54/18th) with Stephens coming out on top. Rounding out the team and finishing as the key 5th runner was Abigail Stewart(23:34/23rd).

“We were short some runners today and barely had the minimum to fill a team,” Ortiz said. “But the five we had out there were good enough to win the team title.”
The Lady Lions will not compete again until Thursday, Oct. 10 when they travel to Round Rock to compete at the 25-5A District Meet. The top 3 teams as well as the Top 10 individuals will then move on from District to the Region IV-5A meet held at Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
