LJHS basketball challanges Wallace on court

The Lockhart Lady Lions’ 8th grade “A” basketball team traveled to play Wallace on Thursday, Feb 10, for their final game this season that resulted in a 39-35 victory.
The Lady Lions scored 15 points from free throws. They averaged 58 percent from the line with shots from Gabbie Cox, Alyson Gonzales, Meredith Moore, Jannah Platt, Ashley Moore, Karoline Pfefferko

rn, Sydney Porter, Chelsy Martinez and Victoria Aguilar.
Both Porter and Martinez scored eight points for Lockhart against Wallace.
Offensively, the Lady Lions pulled down 22 rebounds. M. Moore grabbed three rebounds, A. Moore pulled down seven rebounds, Pfefferkorn grabbed two, Gonzales made one rebound, Platt made one rebound, Martinez pulled down four, Porter made one and Aguilar made three rebounds.
Lockhart hustled on defense as they grabbed 34 rebounds and completed 18 steals.
Pulling down rebounds for Lockhart were Gonzales with two, M. Moore with one, Platt with one, A. Moore with five, Pfefferkorn with nine, Porter with three, Martinez with eight and Aguilar with five rebounds.
Forcing Wallace to turnover the ball was Martinez with four steals, Aguilar with four steals, Gonzales with five steals, Porter with three steals and Pfefferkorn with two steals.
“It is very nice to end the season on a good note,” Coach Stephanie Roberts said. “You always remember the last game for some reason, and I am glad that these girls will remember a victory.
“It was such a bittersweet season. Each Lady Lion had her own obstacles to overcome and each did. I am proud of the girls that we have, they are mature, respectful, sportsmanlike and a very classy group of young ladies,” said Roberts.

8th grade “B”
The Lady Lions’ 8th grade “B” team finished their season with a convincing 45-6 victory over the Wallace Rangers.
The win was their ninth consecutive victory, and gave them a chance at the District title depending on the outcome of other district contests.
The outcome was never in doubt as the Lady Lions scored 13 first-quarter points, while holding Wallace scoreless.
Shelby Ohlendorf led the first quarter charge with four points, while Brittney Johnson contributed three. Vanessa
Gonzales had a solid performance defensively, while contributing two beautiful assists in the quarter.
The second period looked the same, as Lockhart dominated at both ends of the floor.
Khristyn Parra led the second quarter domination with four points and four rebounds. Youlee Merida ended the second period with a steal, and a nice assist to Shelby Henrichs under the basket, who scored at the buzzer. The Lady Lions had a 23-0 advantage at the half.
Lockhart continued their superior play in the third period, with Heather Schulle scoring four points to go along with three rebounds.
The Lady Lions half-court man-to-man defense was outstanding, as Wallace had difficulty running any offense, or getting any shots at their end. In the final period, Heather Domel scored eight of her game high 10 points to finish off the victory.
Team awards were given out on Friday to end a very successful season.
Recognized for outstanding play was Brittney Johnson for “Most Rebounds” during the season, Shelby Henrichs received the “Hustle Award”, Shelby Ohlendorf earned “Top Scorer”, Vanessa Gonzales received the “Most Assists” award, and Heather Domel was given the award for “Most Improved”.
“The girls have a lot to be proud of,” said Coach LeAnn Sibley. “With the
exception of a one-point, and a two-point loss, they were absolutely perfect. At this point, if we had to play the
entire season over again, we couldn’t be beat. I would take them anywhere, to any gym, and be completely confident on what the outcome would be. I’m a little sad to see our great season come to a close.”

7th grade “B”
The Lady Lions’ 7th grade “B” basketball team could not end their season with a win on Thursday, Feb. 10, losing to the Rangers from Wallace Middle School 20-28.
The Lady Lions did not execute plays well and played poor defense. The Lady Lions finally “woke up” and decided to play good basketball in the fourth quarter.
The Lions were down by 20 points, in the fourth and fought for pride in the last two minutes scoring 14 points.
“It was a tremendous come back!” said Coach Alisha Homann.
High scorers for the Lockhart were Kelsey Daily with seven points, Audrey Valdez with five points, Ashley Koehler with three points, Andrea McKinney with two points, Jackie White with two points, and Cortney Ferris with a free throw.
The Lady Lions ended their season in second place with a district record of 7-3 and 9-3 overall.

Lions
7th grade “A”
The Lockhart Lions’ 7th grade “A” team hosted Wallace in their last game of the season on Thursday, Feb. 10, for a close battle that resulted in a 27-32 defeat.
“This was our best game of the year,” said Coach Seth Synder. “At halftime Lockhart was down by eight points, but with three minutes into the third quarter Lockhart was only down by one point and the buzzer sounded.
“Going into the fourth quarter, we had the momentum and fought very hard through the quarter but came up a little short,” Synder said.
Scoring for the Lions were Michael Aldridge with 16 points, Brian Martinez with four points, Samuel Yanez with three points, Kendall Till with two points and David Dinh with two points.
Holding Wallace to only 32 points were defensive players were Roy Garcia, Ryan Houston and Ryan Gonzales.
“I couldn’t be any prouder of these young men. We had finished the second half of the season 4-1, leaving us with a 6-6 record overall and 5-4 district record,” said Synder.
