Lockhart Tennis team earns season’s first district win

   The Lockhart Lions tennis team picked up its first district victory of the season Tuesday night, Sept. 16, traveling to Seguin High School and coming home with a convincing 10-4 win.

   Lockhart controlled the match from start to finish, winning 10 individual matches compared with four for Seguin. The victory marked an important step for the Lions as they continue working their way through district competition and building momentum for the remainder of the season.

   Seniors Brad Martinez Gonzalez and Monserrat Lopez Morales provided two of the strongest performances of the night. The pair recorded Lockhart’s quickest singles victories and remarkably finished their matches at the same time.

   Junior Devin Eckford supplied the highlight of the evening with a play that showed both determination and athleticism. Chasing down a shot driven deep into the corner, Eckford made a diving save to keep the ball alive before sending it back across the court for the winning point.

   The 10-4 victory gives Lockhart its first district win and provides the Lions with some early momentum as the team continues its district schedule. With the seniors setting the pace and younger players making big plays when needed, Lockhart showed Tuesday night that it has plenty to build on moving forward.
