Lions run strong at Gonzales Invite

   The Lockhart High School boys cross country team turned in another strong performance Sept. 19 at the Gonzales XC Invitational, finishing fifth out of 14 varsity teams with 172 points and showing the kind of depth and determination that can carry a team deep into the season. Eladio Figueroa led the Lions across the three-mile course with a time of 17:56, followed by Christopher Cano-Reveles at 18:24. Ryan Ford finished in 19:09, Kingston Metzler in 19:10, and Derek Morgan in 19:12 to complete Lockhart’s scoring five. Angel Silva crossed in 19:15, followed by Keaton Archer at 19:29, Liam Moctezuma at 19:55, Callen Fletcher at 21:49 and Keiran Bussa at 21:50. All 10 Lockhart varsity runners completed the course, giving the Lions a full team effort from the first finisher to the last.

   What stood out most was how closely the Lions worked together throughout the race. Lockhart’s top five finished within 1 minute, 16 seconds of one another, a strong sign of the balance and teamwork the group continues to develop. Cross country is often measured by individual times, but the team standings are built one runner and one position at a time, and every place gained can make a difference. Lockhart finished behind Randolph, Gonzales, Long Creek and Devine while placing ahead of nine other teams in the varsity field. More than the fifth-place finish, the performance reflected the hours of conditioning, early practices and steady work the runners have put in throughout the season. The Lions continue to push one another, compete for one another, and show that their success comes from more than one standout performance. With all 10 runners finishing and the scoring group staying tightly packed, Lockhart left Gonzales with another solid result and another step forward as the season continues.
