Velma Carter Roberts
Velma Carter Roberts was born Sept. 7, 1914, to the late Thomas “Jeff” and Fenora Roland Carter in Dale, Texas, Caldwell County. She was the fifth of seven children and attended school in St. John Colony. She accepted Christ into her life at an early age and was baptized.
Velma was united in holy matrimony to Thefton O. Roberts on May 15, 1938. The couple moved to Co
rpus Christi in 1940, returning to St. John Colony in 1978. Through their union she had ten children, seven daughters and three sons.
Velma was a long time member of the Pentecostal Lighthouse Church in Dale, Texas. Many of her family members have accepted Christ in that little church over the years because of her undying dedication to the Lord.
Velma leaves to celebrate her life: one brother, Preston Carter of Los Angeles; seven daughters: Thelma Hall (husband), of Harrisburg, Pa., Roberta Russ (Joe) of Lockhart, Dorothy Caldwell, of Lockhart, Patricia Roberts of Reading, Pa., Joyce Roberts-Garnes (Frank) of Elizabeth City, N.C., Karen Johnson of Atlanta, Ga., and Barbara Sturgis (husband), of Alexandria, Va.; three sons: Thefton Roberts, Jr. (Ann), of Kyle, Texas, Thomas Roberts (Barbara), of St. John Colony, and Henry Roberts (Patricia), of Corpus Christi; 30 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
Velma now joins in the great reunion with her husband Thefton O. Roberts, Sr., her parents Thomas “Jeff” and Fenora Roland Carter, her sisters, Gertrude Roberts and Nora Spriggs, her brothers, Shirly Carter, Central Carter and Herman Carter, and her grandson Ted Caldwell.
Visitation was held Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Eeds Funeral Home in Lockhart. Services were Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Harold L. Carter officiating, at the St. John Regular Missionary Baptist Church, in Dale. Interment followed at St. John Colony Cemetery in Dale.
