Lions, Lady Lions falter at Smithson Valley

The Lion and Lady Lion track teams continued their spring season last weekend,  competing in the Smithson Valley Ranger Relays on Friday, March 25. Though several individual competitors put up medal-winning performances, the teams’ overall standings were lackluster, with three sixth place and one seventh place finish

on the afternoon.

The Varsity Lions brought home two gold medals.

Sebastian Lamas won the long jump with a mark of 22’01”, while Nate Moore dominated the 3,200-meter run with a course time of 10:06.

Moore also placed fourth in the 1,600-meter run, completing the course in 4:41.

Joseph Bell struck silver in the discus, hitting a mark of 149’05”. Teammate Jordan Huckaby placed fourth in the event, with a throw of 147’04”. Huckaby also placed fifth in the shot put, with a mark of 47’11”.

Juan Lopez placed fourth in the 100-meter dash, with a time of 11.9 seconds.

Bell competed in the 110-meter hurdles, placing sixth with a final time of 17.01 seconds.

Two Lion relay teams placed in the top six.

In the 4×800-meter, the team comprised of Dettrick Reed, Lopez, Chris Jackson and Joseph Bell made a time of 1:34.6 to place fifth.

Reed, Lopez and Jackson teamed with Michael Kerr for a fifth place finish (45.3) in the 4×400-meter relay.

The Varsity Lady Lions earned 49 points for their sixth-place finish, led on the track by Essence Thompson, who won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.6 seconds.

Gabby Galvan made her mark on the field, placing second in the discus with a mark of 134’03”. She placed third in the shot put, with a distance of 34’09”.

Isis Johnson picked up a fourth place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing the course in 17.4 seconds. Raven Reed also had a fourth place finish, completing the 300-meter hurdles in 51.6 seconds.

Olivia Smith put up a time of 2:34 in the 800-meter run for a sixth place finish.

In the 4×800-meter relay, Alex Carter, Lauren Schuelke, Shiletha Akins and Sam Cowan placed fourth with a total time of 1:51.4.

Carter, Chelsea Jones, Schuelke and Johnson also placed fourth as a relay team, completing the 4×400-meter relay in 51.9 seconds.

In Junior Varsity competition,  the Lions garnered 20 team points to establish a sixth-place standing on the meet.

Samuel Post led the Lions with a gold-medal finish in the 800-meter run, completing the course in 2:08. Eli Spring placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:00.

The 4×800-meter relay team of Marcus Johnson, Abel Estrada, Jeremy Gonzales and CJ McKinney placed fifth, with a total time of 1:43.4. They same grouping also placed fifth in the 4×400-meter relay, in 51.9 seconds.

The JV Lady Lions earned an overall seventh place finish, with 27 team points on the board.

Chanti Cypher was the Lady Lions’ leader, with a second place finish in the 100-meter dash (14.1 seconds) and a third place finish in the long jump (14’01”).

Alex Lindsey placed third in the 800-meter run, with a time of 2:33, and Tassondra McClelland had a fight place mark in the shot put at 29’05”.

The Lions and Lady Lions will continue to compete at area meets for the next two weekends, and then will compete in the District Track Meet on April 12-13 at New Braunfels Canyon.
