L.H.S. Cross County races past competition

The Lockhart High School Cross Country team kicked off their season by hosting their annual Invitational Cross Country Meet on Saturday, Aug. 27.
After combining all the teams” efforts, the Lion took the first place trophy and the Lady Lions took fourth over 23 other teams, including several competitive 5-A schools.
“I am e
xcited about how we competed against all 23 teams,” Coach Scott Hippensteel said. “They ran hard and exceeded my expectations. I”m very pleased with their performances. We are off to a great start, and I can”t wait for the district meet.”
Competing against 162 runners, the Lady Lions” varsity team missed the second place trophy by only 13 points making A&M Consolidated at first place, Hays at second place and New Braunfels at third place.
The Lions” varsity team won first place with 35 points leaving A&M Consolidated trailing behind with 39 points and the next closest team being Hays with 113 points.
For the Lady Lions, senior team captain Tami Warner led the team taking 10th place with 12:11. Sophomores Livi Massey, 19th place with 12:36, and Alyson Daily, 22nd place with 12:41, followed Warner”s lead.
Also competing for the Lady Lions were freshman Jannah Platt in 32nd place with 13:15, sophomore Naomi Oliva in 33rd place with 13:15, senior Courtney Lee in 34th place with 13:17, sophomore Leandra Garcia in 54th place with 13:49, junior Ashley Simon in 79th place with 13:59, freshman Shelby Ohlendorf in 88th place with 14:00, Elizabeth Garcia in 122nd place with 14:35 and much improved senior Ashlyn Spring in 133rd with 14:46.
Racing to the finish line for the Lions were Justin Platt in 3rd place with 9:27, Nick Yunkun in 5th place with 9:37, Rory Tunningley in 7th place with 9:43, Clay Culpepper in 8th place with 9:44, Jonathan Fitzgerald in 15th place with 9:54, Nic Alford in 16th place with 10:00, Sean Smith in 18th place with 10:02, Stoney McCrary in 20th with 10:11, James Silva in 33rd with 10:30, Scott Woody in 36th place with 10:38, James Bonn in 52nd place with 10:59, and Marcus Gonzales in 60th place with 11:10.
The Lockhart High School Cross Country team will travel to College Station for their next meet on Sept. 17.
