Lois Notley
Lois Eileen Notley went to be with the Lord on July 8, 2012. She had been under 24-hour hospice care for three days. She passed away at Colonial Lodge Assisted Living in Plano, Texas. Lois had moved from Lockhart to Plano in 2009 to be near her daughters, Nancy Amos and Anne Guerrero.
Lois was a resident of Lockhart from 1947 -1967, at which time her husband William (“Bill
”) was transferred to Ft. Worth, where they lived until his death in 1975. Lois returned to Lockhart. She taught English in Lockhart from 1958 – 1967, and then from 1975 – 1987.
Lois was a fourth generation Kansan. She was born to Fitzhugh Lee and Mae Jones Smith in Girard, Kan., on March 6, 1916. She moved with her parents to Garden City, Kan., in 1920. She graduated from Kansas State University in 1937.
Lois was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, and graduated with a degree in journalism. She married William E. Notley in 1938. She and Bill moved 51 times from 1938-1948 when Bill was a geophysicist for Standard Oil of Indiana.
Lois was an active member of the Lockhart Retired Teacher’s Association, several bridge clubs, and First United Methodist Church in Lockhart. At the church she had been a children’s Sunday school teacher, president of UMW, active volunteer, and participant in Bible studies. She loved the church members and her other friends in Lockhart, including her friends at The Greens.
Lois remained a voracious reader, and even in her 96th year loved to talk with others about the things she learned reading the Smithsonian, National Geographic and the Bible. She imparted a deep curiosity about the world to her children and grandchildren.
Her greatest legacy by far was her active faith in Jesus Christ, which she shared freely, first with her daughters and, even in the last years of her life, with the staff at Colonial Lodge, who gave her great care.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Amos and husband, Pat; daughter, Anne Guerrero and husband, Tom; granddaughter, Angie White and husband, Gary; grandson, Austin Amos and wife, Lindsey; and also by great-granddaughters Katherine White, Meredith White, Claire Amos and William Amos. Lois will be greatly missed by family, friends, and caretakers.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 13 at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Lockhart. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Lockhart.
Anne, Nancy, and all,
I wish I could be there this week to celebrate your mom’s life with you. She was such a special person. She taught me so much beyond English, even many years later when I would stop by to talk to her during the Lockhart Chisolm Trail parade. She always had kind words and gentle advice to share. I have missed seeing her there the past few years. May you always have wonderful memories of her and be at peace knowing she has claimed the reward for which she had been preparing.
All my love and sympathy,
Nancy
