Peggy Harper Edwards
Peggy Harper Edwards passed from this life on Nov. 29, 2012, at her son’s home in New Braunfels, after a long illness. She was 89 years old.
She was preceded in death by her parents Edith May Ellison and Robert Monroe Harper; sister, Martha Kroney DeBaggis; and husband, Frank Smith Edwards.
She is survived by her daughter, Penny Edwards Vaughn; son, Randy Edwards and wi
fe Lynn; sister, Loraine Harrison and husband, Les; sister, Alice Harper; sister-in-law, Jo Anita Edwards; grandsons: Ross Vaughn, Randal Vaughn and wife, Kim, Robert Edwards and Reed Edwards; great-grandchildren, Max Vaughn, Ethan Cheney and Ellison Marie Vaughn; and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
Peggy Mae Harper was born Sept. 22, 1923, to Edith and Robert Harper in San Marcos. She was raised in the close-knit community of Martindale by a caring extended family as her mother had passed away when Peggy was only six years old. She attended school in Martindale and graduated from San Marcos High School in 1941 and then attended Baylor University.
Peggy married Frank Edwards, her high school sweetheart and the star basketball player, in 1943. Frank served in World War II as 1st Lt. and Army Air Force B-24 bomber pilot in the Phillippines. Peggy and Frank had two children, Penny, born in 1945, and Randy, born in 1947.
At age 36 Peggy became a widow and returned with her children to her beloved Martindale. She graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1964 having obtained a degree in home economics. From 1964 – 1967 she taught home economics at Canyon High School in New Braunfels.In 1967 she began her career with the Texas State Department of Agriculture as a county home extension agent. She worked in Goldthwaite, San Antonio, Waco and Bandera.
In 1980 Peggy received the National Association of Extension Home Economists Award for Distinguished Service, their highest recognition. The Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University, bestowed the Award for Superior Service to her in 1982.
After retiring, Peggy moved to New Braunfels to be near her children and grandchildren. She was an active member of her church and many community organizations and served as Regent for the Captain James Jack Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She enjoyed travel, bridge, friends and family. She was fun-loving and had a great sense of humor. Peggy gave her all to everything she did in life. She was devoted to her family and friends and was always ready to give of herself to help in whatever way was needed. She had a strong abiding faith in God that sustained her through all the hardships of her life. She was thankful for the good life she had and looked forward to being united with the Lord and her loved ones.

Family received friends at Pennington Funeral Home, at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6. A Celebration of Life Service followed at 2 p.m. in the Pennington Memorial Chapel, with the Rev.
