Lockhart loses close games in Seguin
Senior Alvarez named to Matador All-Tournament team
The Lion basketball team played in the Seguin Matador Invitational last weekend. The team entered the tournament with a 3-2 overall record.
Lockhart lost their first game of the tournament against Smithson Valley with a final score of 77-63.
Yet the Lions were able to come back for their second game and
defeat Austin Crockett 61-52.
For their third game, the Lions faced Austin Akins, whom they defeated on Tuesday, Nov. 30. But Akins got their revenge and beat the Lions 68-63.
“Of course we would have like to win more games in the tournament. However, I am extremely please with our progress this year,” said coach Tony Knight, who explained six out of the eight games played have been against 5A schools. “We aren”t just playing tough teams, we”re playing them tough.”
Jacob Alvarez made the Matador All-Tournament team and averaged 14 points, five rebounds and two assists per game.
Following Alvarez were Garrett Shafer, who averaged 11 points, four rebounds and three assists and Mark Black, who averaged 13 points, five rebounds and one assist per game.
Other standouts include Michael Spears with seven points, six rebounds and three blocks and Jonathan Sanders with six points and six rebounds, both on average.
Knight also cited Michael Schulle, who came off the bench and made key contributions.
“There”s absolutely no giving up in these guys,” said Knight about the team. “They”re a scrappy bunch. I love coaching them. I absolutely love it.”
The Lions will travel to Wimberley for another tournament the weekend Dec. 9-11. The team hopes to get at least eight or nine wins before District starts on Monday, Dec. 20.
