Lester Caldwell
Lester Leon Caldwell, of Lockhart, went to his heavenly home on Feb. 18, 2014, at the age of 96. He was a strong, fun-loving, family oriented, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was deeply loved and will be forever missed.
Lester was a WWII Veteran that served in five major campaigns and came ashore on D-Day at Normandy Beach. He retired from the City of A
ustin and was a life member of the American Legion Post 41 and the VFW Post 8927 in Lockhart. He enjoyed gardening and canning with his late wife and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed in December 1949.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Amanda Caldwell; his parents; one brother; two sisters; and one great-grandson.
He is survived by his two daughters, Ruby Owen and husband, John, of Lockhart, and Phoebe Giddens, of Houston; two sisters-in-law, Alma McWright, of Austin, and Mary Frances Rauder, of Houston; six grandchildren: Randy Owen and wife, Becky, Krisi Gorman, Stacie Schroeder and husband, Trey, Cassy Sandobal and husband, John, Bert Giddens and wife, Jennifer, and Brittany Burns and husband, Harvey; eight great-granddaughters, one great-grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A special thank you to Dr. Charles Lawrence of Lockhart who gave him outstanding care all of these years and to Chisholm Trail Nursing and Rehab Center in Lockhart. He made his home there for the last six years and received loving care from all the nurses, aides, and staff.
Visitation was Monday, Feb. 24 from 6 – 8 p.m. at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar, Austin. Services were Tuesday, Feb. 25 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 3501 Red River, Austin at 1 p.m., with Pastors Mark Nuckols and Sherman Stenson presiding.
Interment will be held at Cook-Walden Memorial Hill, 14501 IH-35, Pflugerville, Texas cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Paul Lutheran Church or St. Paul Lutheran School “Class of ‘57,” 3501 Red River, Austin, Texas. 78705.
