Anderson pours it on late over Lions 57-14

Lockhart ended its home season with a 57-14 loss to Austin Anderson Friday at Lions Stadium, its fourth consecutive loss. In the process, the Lions lost star running back Nathaniel Gonzales for this week’s finale at District champion and undefeated A&M Consolidated in College Station, while others are also in jeopardy of missing the game due to injuries.
The Lions stunned the visiting Trojans with a successful onsides kick to open the game, and despite being penalized and having to it again, Lockhart was successful as Evan Estrada recovered his own kick.
I took just three plays for the Lions to capitalize as quarterback Kadon Moebes found fellow sophomore Kaidyn Roland-Brite on a 37-yard touchdown pass over the middle with 10:42 left in the first quarter. Estrada’s PAT gave Lockhart a 7-0 lead.
Anderson answered with just two plays, the big blow coming on an 83-yard strike from UTSA commitment quarterback Max Gerlich to Ben Hatcher, who sprinted the final 49 yards after hauling in the pass. Ryan Ostboe’s PAT tied the game at 7-7 with 10:01 left in the first quarter.
It only took the Trojans three plays again on their next possession to reach pay dirt, this time on a 24-yard pass from Gerlich to TCU commitment wide receiver Ed Small. Ostboe’s kick made it 14-7, Anderson, with 3:17 left in the opening period.
Lockhart running back Nathaniel Gonzales (see related story on Page 1A), playing for the final time at Lions Stadium, scored his final high school touchdown three plays into the second quarter on an incredible 26-yard run where he broke several would-be tackles. Estrada tied the game at 14-14 with his PAT with 10:20 left in the first half.
Anderson would outscore Lockhart 43-0 the rest the way.
The Trojans scored on a 23-yard run by lightning quick running back Jay Fullmer with 8:47 remaining in the half.
Dean Kranek made it 28-14 with 6:36 left in the half on a 12-yard run.
Anderson scored on its first possession of the second half, an 18-yard pass from Gerlich to Small with 6:03 left in the third quarter to make it 35-14.
Any chance of a Lockhart comeback ended when the Trojans sacked Moebes in the end zone for a safety with 9:16 remaining and a 37-14 Anderson lead.
The Trojans used their starters the rest of the way to make it a rout. Gerlich and Small again hooked up on another 18-yard TD pass with 8:13 remaining and a 43-14 lead.
Yet again, Gerlich passed 55 yards to Small for a TD with 4:49 remaining and a 50-14 lead.
Not yet through padding its starters’ stats, the Trojans added a 15-yard Fullmer TD run with 3:09 remaining.
Gerlich finished with 383 yards through the air, 236 on 8 receptions by Small and 130 on 4 catches by Ben Hatcher. Fullmer also rushed for 221 yards on 29 attempts.
The Trojans had scoring drives of 2, 3, 6, 7, 4, 5, and 3 plays.
Lockhart was paced by Gonzales with 133 yards on 26 attempts. Malik Hill had 25 yards on just 3 carries. Moebes passed for 134 yards, 86 of which were caught on 7 receptions by Gage Deutsch.
Estrada also punted twice for the Lions for a 52.5 average.
College Station won the battle with Weiss, 44-38, in what was for the No. 2 position in the district. Weiss led 17-0 before the Cougars rallied. A&M has done through the district undefeated (it will host Lockhart Friday in the regular-season finale), meaning the College Station schools will each host a first-round playoff game.
NOTES: The previous meeting between the schools was 1991 when Lockhart belted the Trojans 50-18. In that game, James Hedgespeth, in his first start as a Lockhart Lion, had a 90-yard touchdown run and 209 yards in al on just nine carries.
Hedgespeth also scored on a 67-yard run.
Wilson, who had a 50-yard touchdown run, also became the state powerlifting champion.
Quarterback Mark Mosqueda passed for 150 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for a score.
Defensively, Lockhart had a pair of interceptions, one each by Leonard Jones and Godfrey Spruiell.
Then-LHS Head Coach Terry Moore always had an “Unsung Hero” of the game, and in the win gave the honor to all of the offensive line — Chase Allen, Felipe Carrisalez, Russell Wheeler, Chauncey Frank, Rodney Taylor, and Jaime Rodriguez.
