Aston “Maurice” Reed


Aston “Maurice” Reed, 91, passed away on Jan. 6, 2012. Maurice was born Dec. 4, 1920, to W. L. and Rossie Reed in McMahan, Texas. He began school in McMahan, later graduating from Lockhart High School. For a short time after high school, he attended business school and worked in Austin. During World War II, he worked in airplane construction for the War Effort. Returning to

McMahan after the war, Maurice began his farming and ranching career, which would span six decades. Primarily known for raising hogs, he also raised cattle and sheep, as well as crops like maize and corn. Proud of his McMahan roots, he always helped with the annual homecoming, which benefits the Jeffrey Cemetery, and was one of the first members on the McMahan Water Board.

Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, W. L. and Rossie Reed; brother, Garlon Reed; wife, Dorothy Reed; and son, Greg Reed.

Maurice is survived by four children: Steve Reed, of Austin, Lee Landry, of McMahan, Max Landry and wife, Sondra, of Austin, and Gary Landry and wife, Patty, of Cedar Creek; four grandchildren: Kourtne Landry, of Galveston, Jesse Landry, of Austin, Travis Landry, of Cedar Creek, and Chase Morton, of Austin; and two nephews: Harlon Reed, of McMahan, and David Reed, of Austin.

In mid-2010, after having gall bladder surgery and with progressing Parkinson’s disease, this hard working member of America’s Greatest Generation, slowed down, but continued to amaze his family and friends. Each time his health was challenged, he fought back and was able to come home to his farm, leading a fairly normal life.

The family wishes to express its thanks to: Luling Seton Hospital, which provided care on several occasions; Hillcrest Nursing Home, whose rehabilitation efforts allowed him to come back home twice; Advanced Home Health Services which provided home therapy and check ups; and St. David’s Hospital, whose caregivers comforted him in his final days.

Visitation was held from 5 – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, at McCurdy Memorial Chapel. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 11, 2012, at McCurdy Memorial Chapel. Interment followed in Jeffrey Cemetery, which overlooks his farm. Pallbearers were Paul Caballero, Henry Castillo, Earl Hagan, Harlon Reed, David Reed and Weston Voigt. Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Hellums and Marlon McGee. Officiating was Elder Bill “Sonny” Huckaby.

    Although I lost touch with your Dad many years ago, I have never forgotten his kindness toward me when I was teen-ager. I had no place to go and your Dad opened up his home and took me in.

    Sorry for you loss,it sounds like your Dad was fighter to the end.
