A divisive vote by the Lockhart ISD Board of Trustees on Monday evening will change the structure of the district’s athletics department next year.
After several years of having two athletic directors in place, each with additional coaching responsibilities, the board voted on Monday to consolidate the positions, and w

ill assign one Athletic Director to supervise the department. District Superintendent Tom Bailey was still drafting the job description at press time, but it was suggested during the meeting that the position of Athletic Director may no longer be a coaching position, but will carry strictly administrative duties. More details on this change will follow as they become available.
In other business, each board member received gifts from LISD students in honor of School Board Appreciation Month. Students from kindergarten through 12th grade attended the meeting to present a variety of cards, mugs and sporting equipment to their assigned board members.
The board also opted to introduce a Veterinary Technician program at Lockhart High School and LHS Freshman Campus under the district’s Career and Technology program. Final details on the program will be released as details regarding the program’s budget are presented to the board. However, the trustees authorized principals Larry Ramirez and John Henk to add the classes to their course catalogs and schedule blocks to allow students to register for the classes.
The LISD Board of Trustees meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Conference Center at Lockhart High School.
