Calvary Chapel helps those in search of warmth

Calvary Chapel, on North Main Street, again served as a warming station during the recent drop in temperatures around Lockhart.
According to Calvary Chapel Pastor Pete Arciniega, Jr., as many as nine people used the warming station, but only four stayed overnight.
“It was less than last year because rain has been at a minimum,” Arciniega said of the colder-than-usual temperatures last week. “It’s unfortunate, but sometimes you have to have it. We’re trying to make sure that everybody is good. Everybody understands that we are family. Volunteers have been good (about) providing food and blankets. One man even shipped us a whole bunch of sweatsuits.”
There are necessity kits available for kids with toothpaste, toothbrushes, and deodorant, although Arciniega said there had been no children use the warming center this year.
“We did have a couple of ladies,” said Arciniega, who added that the warming center is run “military style, with people watching the whole time they’re sleeping. Safety is our most important thing.”
The is the fifth consecutive year Calvary Chapel has welcomed those needing warmth.
Arciniega credits Thomas and Jessica Eklund of Lockhart for providing the ministry.
