Charley Joe Hailey, Sr., 92, died Friday, July 19, 2013. Services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at the Anson Church of Christ with Joe Hailey and Bob Hailey officiating. Burial followed at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at Texas State Veterans Cemetery, directed by Adams-Graham Funeral Home. The family visitation was Monday night from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at the

funeral home.

Charley Joe Hailey was born March 20, 1921, in Royse City, Texas, to Joe and Elizabeth Dowell Hailey. This was the home of his maternal grandparents. His parents actually lived in Lott, Texas. Charley was raised in Lott and graduated from Lott High School.

He married Willamae Ponton on June 6, 1945, in Victoria, Texas. They had two sons and a daughter. His wife died after 66 years of marriage.

He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos. He taught school in Hungerford, Texas until the United States entered World War II. He signed up and was inducted into the Army Air Corps. He served his country until the war ended. He then completed his Masters’ Degree from the University of Houston in school administration. He served as the Superintendent of Hungerford Independent School District until 1950.

He then worked as an accountant for Tennessee Gas Pipeline, which later became Tenneco Corporation, until his retirement as a supervisor of an accounting division of Tenneco”s main office in 1983. He was called back to work for about two more years.

He served as a part-time preacher for congregations of the Church of Christ in Victoria and in the Houston area. For four years, he preached for the congregation now called the Champions Church of Christ of Houston. He then served as an elder for the Memorial Church of Christ of Houston for 42 years.

Charley resided in Lockhart, near his son Bob Hailey, until his death. He died Friday, July 19, in Parkview Nursing Home at the age of 92.

Preceding him in death were his parents, stepmother, wife, daughter Mary Winbigler, one brother and two sisters.

Survivors include sons,Charley Joe “Joe” Hailey, Jr., and wife, Deborah, of Anson, Texas, and Robert Dowell “Bob” Hailey and wife, Betty, of Lockhart; son-in-law Steven Carl “Steve” Winbigler and wife, Dana, of Katy,Texas; grandchildren: Joe Hailey, III, Jeremy Hailey, Brian Hailey, Mike Winbigler, Ben Hailey, Kari White and Sara Hailey; three great-grandchildren: Trevor Hart, Micaela Hailey and David Hailey; sister-in-law Mildred Parsons, of Victoria; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
