The Varsity Lady Lions went up against the Cuero Lady Gobblers on Tuesday, Dec. 4, and could not catch up after a tough first quarter that left them with a 15-point deficit. The game ended at 77-64.
From the very beginning the Lady Gobblers kept pecking away at the Lady Lions, until it was too late for anything short of a mira

cle to save them from a loss.
The first quarter ended at 24-9, the second quarter at 40-31 and the third at 58-39.
The Lockhart actually outscored Cuero during the second and fourth quarters, but even that was not enough to make up for the first quarter deficit. The second quarter ended with Lockhart scoring 24 points to Cuero’s 16. The fourth quarter ended with Lockhart scoring 25 points, while Cuero only scored 19.
As good as those two quarters were it was during the first and third quarter that the Lady Lions lost the game. The third quarter ended almost as badly as the first with the Lockhart scoring only eight points while allowing Cuero to add 18 points to their score.
Mariah Carter did most of the scoring for Lockhart. She put a total of 25 points on the board for the Lady Lions and led the team well by assisting others to score.
The second highest scorer was Vanessa Gonzales with 12 points. The rest of the points came from Alisha Officer with eight, Amanda Alvarez with six, Tori Hill with five and finally, Kariah Selby and Desiree Roland with four points each.
The Freshman Lady Lions also lost to Cuero. The team played well despite the 45-25 loss.
“I thought we did an excellent job breaking their press tonight,” Coach Dave Johnston said.
Lady Lions had five different players make it into their scorebook. Gwen Sander, Samantha Duncan and Alyson Baltierra each made six points for the team. Karla Stovall made four points and Amy Alvarez made three.
“We really did a great job attacking the basket on the offensive end,” Johnston said. “We controlled the basketball, made some good passes and gave ourselves opportunities. We are continuing to improve each game and that is our goal.”
The Lady Lions play at Del Valle on Friday, Dec. 14. Games start at 5 p.m.
See you at the game.
