Ferdie Scharschmidt, 84, of Lockhart, was called home to be with his Lord on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015.

Ferdinand Scharschmidt was born at 5 a.m. on Aug. 1, 1931, to Rudolph Scharschmidt and Pearl Freudensprung Scharschmidt in Caldwell County.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 51 years, LaNell; his brother and sister-in-law Rudy and Delores Scharschmidt; h

is sister and brother-in-law Margaret and Henry Montalvo; and nephews Fred Wagner and Marty Montalvo.

Ferdie attended Lockhart High School, graduating in 1949. During the Korean War he served in the Marines from March of 1952 until March of 1954. His duties kept him on US soil as he was a diesel mechanic stationed in California. He remained in the Reserve of the United States Marine Corps until honorably discharged in March of 1960.

Married to his best friend and love of his life, LaNell Wagner on April 10, 1954, he enjoyed spending time with her as they were seldom seen without each other. While they had no children, he was a role model to many and loved being around youth, whether it was his nieces and nephews or the children of the community, he was always a kind and gentle spirit that knew how to make people laugh. In his retirement he assisted in a reading program in the Lockhart Elementary school and found great pleasure in helping to develop the reading skills of these students.

Ferdie was an accountant for Glosserman Chevrolet in Lockhart for 42 years until his retirement and received a number of distinguished awards from Chevrolet for his many years of service.

A devoted member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Ferdie served as Financial Secretary and President of the Church Council and was tireless in his efforts to preserve the church and its grounds.

He was an active member of the Grand Lodge of the Order of the Sons of Hermann, Lockhart Lodge #64 and served in a number of leadership roles in the local organization.

Ferdie is survived by family including nieces: Debra (John) Yarbrough, of Denver, Patti Scharschmidt, of Hutto, Carol (Marc) Troy, of Round Rock, and Lisa (Ken) Brockman, of Katy; nephews, Glen Wagner and Keith Montalvo, of California; as well as great-nephews Christopher Godsey, Kenny and Ben Brockman. He is also survived by many dear and life-long friends including Joann and Jan Holcomb, Royal and LaVinnie Solomon, Dolores Jones and sons Steven, Mike and Mark, and Dickie Rutherford.

Honorary pallbearers include cousin, Hugo Schaarschmidt; nephews, John Yarbrough and Marc Troy; great-nephew, Christopher Godsey; and friends Royal Solomon, Andy Burton and Junior Simon.

The family offers special thanks and appreciation to the staff of Seton Hays Intensive Care Unit, especially Katie, Mary Katherine and Dr. Patel.

For the past few years, Ferdie enjoyed residence in the Golden Age Home in Lockhart, Texas where he received compassionate care and genuine friendship from the staff and residents. While a transition from home is always difficult, Ferdie’s family and friends extend a heartfelt appreciation to Nicole, Summer, Lupe and the entire staff for taking such good care of Ferdie.

In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions could be made in Ferdie’s memory to the Golden Age Home at 1505 S. Main Street in Lockhart, Texas, 78644.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, 2015 with interment following at Lockhart City Cemetery.

    You will be missed Uncle Ferdie, but we know you are loving being reunited with Aunt Nell. Condolences to all of the Scharschmidt family.
