Lockhart ISD announced the appointment of Michael Herbin as the new principal of Lockhart High School for the 2025–2026 school year. A veteran educator with a strong record of success, Herbin brings a wealth of experience in instructional leadership, school improvement, and whole child focused practices.

Herbin currently serves as principal of Akins Early College High School in Austin ISD, one of the largest 6A high schools in the region, with more than 2,600 students.      Under his leadership, the campus saw significant gains, including increased STAAR End-of-Course passing rates, a graduation rate of 97%, a substantial expansion of Career and Technical Education pathways, and a rise in college readiness through systems that improved Texas Success Initiative (TSI) performance. He also led the largest Early College High School program in Austin ISD, graduating over 40 students with associate degrees in 2023 alone. His success led to his recognition as a finalist for Austin ISD’s 2023–2024 High School Principal of the Year.

“We are thrilled to welcome Michael Herbin to Lockhart ISD,” said Superintendent Mark Estrada. “His leadership experience, heart for people, and results-driven approach make him a powerful fit for Lockhart High School. He brings a visionary mindset that will build on the great work happening at LHS and help elevate our students to new levels of success.”

“I am honored to join Lockhart ISD and serve as the next principal of Lockhart High School,” said Herbin. “The district’s commitment to excellence and innovation aligns with my values. I’m excited to work alongside the talented staff and supportive families to continue building on the school’s success and unlock even more opportunities for our students.”

Herbin holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from Texas State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Grinnell College. He will officially begin his role this summer as the district prepares for the 2025–2026 school year. Community members are invited to a Meet and Greet with Mr. Herbin on June 18 from 6:00–7:00 PM at Lockhart High School.
