Herschel B. Smith, avid hunter, fisherman, wonderful father, and a darn good salesman, died Monday, Sept. 7, 2007 after a long illness. He was born in Houston on Aug. 12, 1930 to George Smith and Octavia Griffith.
After growing up in Baytown (Barbers Hills, Cedar Bayou), he obtained a communications advertising degree from the University of Texas at Austin, served in t

he Air Force, and worked for several television and radio stations as an ad salesman. He retired from KVET/KASE radio in Austin after 32 years with them.
In 2004 Herschel was inducted into the Texas Pioneer Club of the Texas Association of Broadcasters for Exemplary Service to the Texas Broadcast Industry.
He is survived by his daughter Linda Mooney of Victoria; son Bret Smith of Blue Ridge, Ga.; five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
A memorial service where friends and family celebrated Herschel”s life was held on Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Eeds Funeral Home in Lockhart. As per his wishes, Herschel was cremated, and his ashes will be interred near his home in Lytton Springs, Texas.
