Islas, Gomez square off in Democratic Party Runoff

Early voting opens on May 19 in the runoff election for the Democratic Party nomination for Caldwell County Judge.
The candidates, Fermin Islas and Paul Gomez, earned their runoff spot during the March 2014 Primaries. Islas, the majority vote-getter, earned 1,007 votes during that election, to Gomez’s 590
. The third candidate in the original race, James “Jimmy” Bertram was edged out, having earned 585 votes after the ballots were counted.
Election Day for the runoff is May 27, 2014. However, early voting will be available in Lockhart and Luling, and opens on Monday.
Voters who chose to vote in Lockhart may do so in the Conference and Training Center of the LW Scott Annex, 1403 Blackjack St., from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., Monday – Friday, May 19-23.
Polls will be open after the Memorial Day holiday, on Tuesday, May 27, from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.
The winner of the runoff will face Republican nominee Kenneth Schawe, who ran unopposed in the Primaries, in the November General Election.
Voters are reminded that under new state laws, identification is required at the ballot box. Voters must present one of the following forms of identification before being permitted to cast a vote:
– Texas driver license, issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS);
– Texas Election Identification Certificate, issued by DPS;
– Texas personal identification card, issued by DPS;
– United States military identification card, containing the voter’s photograph;
– United States citizenship certificate, containing the voter’s photograph;
– Texas concealed handgun license, issued by DPS; or
– United States passport.
With the exception of the US Citizen certificate, the identification must be valid and current, or have expired no more than 60 days before being presented at the polling location.
