James Lawrence Owens went to be with our Lord and Savior Monday, Sept. 16, 2013. He was born Aug. 26, 1936, near Gonzales, Texas.

As a boy, he enjoyed a country life of hunting with his older brother Wayne and friendships with his high school buddies Jimmy Barnett and Lamar Chuter.

He graduated from Luling High School and shortly thereafter was employed by Southe

rn Pacific Railroad. He met his future wife, Linda, at her 16th birthday party. They were married Jan. 18, 1958. After getting married, he worked with Linda”s uncle on his dairy farm in Lockhart. Later, he worked as the Service Manager at Goodyear and then went on to work for Caldwell County, as the Rural Inspector on building sites which included flood plain management.

His hobby was fishing on the Texas coast with his Luling school buddy, Jimmy Barnett.

James” favorite morning pastime was sitting on the back porch deck (which he built after retirement), enjoying nature and having coffee with the love of his life, Linda. Home improvements and gardening were among some of his interests. Family was very important to his life, also.

He and Linda were looking forward to going to Pennsylvania later this year and also spending a few days in New Orleans on the way back.

However, our Lord had other plans for him. James truly loved his wife and family and was glad to let it show.  Lockhart was their home for 50 years of the 55 he and Linda were married.

Some of his favorite pastimes were: traveling by plane and train, learning to play the violin, watching football games and newscasts on television, country and western music and helping deliver “Meals on Wheels.”

James was blessed by being healthy and strong throughout his life and having wonderful children and grandchildren.  His and the family’s decision was for cremation and the remains of his spirit’s earthly dwelling be scattered on his favorite fishing site in Corpus Christi    soon.

James is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda; his son, Randy and wife, Debbie, of Quakertown, Pa.; daughter, Melanie Ellis and husband, Carl, of Arlington, Texas; son, Jason of Lockhart; daughter, Sheila Shannon and husband, Bradly, of Austin; and grandchildren: Erich, Raeanne, Jayden, Ryan, Phoebe, Dylan, Jared, Levi, Amy, Faith and Serene, those of whom he felt extremely blessed to have.

Preceding him in death were his parents George H. and Laverne and his older brother Wayne H. Owens.

A Celebration of Life was held on Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, with Pastor Randy Frye officiating. All arrangements with Eeds Funeral Home, 408 S. Main St., Lockhart, Texas 78644. (512) 398-2343. To view and sign the guestbook, visit www.post-register.com/obituaries/james-owens.
