Lady Cards take Lady Lions down to the wire

The Lockhart Lady Lion Volleyball teams played in the Lions’ Den against the Del Valle Lady Cardinals on Friday, Sept. 21. The Varsity and Junior Varsity teams played in the new gym while the Freshman Maroon team played in the old gym.
The Varsity team lost a nail-biter to the Lady Cardinals by winning the first two matches
25-16 and 25-22 then losing the last three matches with scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 15-13. The JV Lady Lions won with 25-6 and 25-11 scores and the Freshman Maroon team won with 25-20 and 25-23 scores.
The noise from fans in the gym during the last three varsity matches was deafening. Del Valle Freshman and JV Lady Cardinal teams served as cheerleaders for the Varsity Lady Cards. The younger teams were relentless in their cheering. They screamed and screamed as the matches got tighter and tighter until the final point when the Lady Lions fell to the Lady Cardinals with a game and fate-deciding kill.
The Varsity Lady Lions played exceptionally well on Friday night. They controlled the court and their game throughout the first two matches. They made great plays and scored plenty of points.
Camille Burrhus-Clay made 12 kills while Kelly Witte made 11 and added six blocks, three aces and 14 assists to her statistics. Mariah Carter made six kills and Cecilya Smith made seven kills. Nine digs came from Brianna Hinnenkamp while five digs came from Ashley Moore, who also contributed five aces. Blocks came from Jenee Burrhus-Clay, who made seven and Natalie Raemsch, who added four. Jessica Guerra led the team on assists with a total of 18.
“The girls gave a great effort and are still working hard and we look forward to the second round of district,” Head Volleyball Coach Melinda Kirst said.
The Lady Lions also lost to the Steele Lady Knights on Monday, Sept. 17 with scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-19. Witte contributed eight kills to the game, while Smith added five. Guerra and Witte each had 10 assists. Moore, C. Burrhus-Clay and J. Burrhus-Clay each made two aces. Hinnenkamp had eight digs and Smith had four. Witte had two blocks and Raemsch had one.
The Lady Lions face Clemens on Sept. 25, and Hays on Sept. 28.
