Lady Lion soccer works toward district play
The Lady Lions played on the road against Seguin on Tuesday, Jan 20. They worked hard and it paid off. The girls won 5-0.
Annais Villasenor did a great job leading the defense. Marina Gonzales, Danielle Reynolds and Olivia Gibeaux assisted the shots made by Perla Jaramillo, Marina Gonzales, Danielle Reynolds, Kassara Bothell and Ashley Hagan.
“Way to play
ladies, keep it up,” Coach Tim Bayliss said.
Junior Varsity tournament
The Lockhart Junior Varsity Lady Lions participated in the Fifth Annual Austin JV Soccer Shoot Out Tournament held at the AISD Noack Stadium from Thursday, Jan. 15 – Saturday, Jan. 17.
The air was crisp and cold on Friday when the girls played their first game against Anderson. They had a slow start, but by the second half, they turned it on and scored three goals and maxed out the points they could receive by shutting out Anderson with a 3-0 victory. Hagan and Gibeaux assisted the goals and Bothell, Jaramillo and Shelby Miranda put them in the net.
Later that night, the Lady Lions played a game against Crockett. Again, the Lady Lions played hard in the first half, but could not put one in the net. After the half they came out ready to play and put two in the net while keeping the other team from scoring. The girls finished with a 2-0 win. Bothell and Gibeaux made the assists. Gibeaux and Villasenor scored.
Early Saturday afternoon the Lady Lions took the field again. The day was much warmer than expected and the girls were caught off guard in the first half when LBJ scored a goal. They answered right back with a goal of their own before the half ended.
Not wanting to lose first place in their bracket, the girls stepped it up a notch and got one more in the net securing their place in the championship game later that night. The girls finished the game with a 2-1 victory over LBJ and advanced to the playoffs. Hagan and Gibeaux assisted Bothell in scoring both goals.
In the playoff game, the Lady Lions were matched up against McCallum. The team came out ready to play, and they did. There were several hard hits and the girls played on. McCallum got lucky on a breakaway and put in the first goal of the game. They got in another goal before the half was over.
The Lady Lions did not back down. They started the second half harder than the first. Gonzales passed to Bothell for the only Lockhart goal of the game. The ladies played a hard-fought game and came up just a little short in the end, falling 1-2 to McCallum.
Cierra Longmire played an excellent game at goalkeeper, not allowing any of McCallum’s shots in the second half. The girls finished second overall in the tournament and improved their playing as a team the entire tournament.
“Your coaches couldn’t be prouder ladies, way to play” Bayliss said.
The Lady Lions hosted Crockett at Lion Stadium on Tuesday, Jan. 27 and will travel to Giddings on Friday, Jan. 30. Check next week’s Post-Register for scores and highlights.
