Lady Lions strong in tournament play

The Varsity Lady Lion volleyball team is off to a strong start on the season, earning success the last two weekends in area tournaments and going into regular-season play with a 6-8 record

Two weeks ago, the Lady Lions participated in the Wimberley TexFest tournament, finishing as the Consolation winner o

f the Silver bracket.

The Lady Lions defeated Austin Regents in three (27-25), (21-25) and (27-25). They also took down Burnet (25-22) and (25-20) on their way to the Consolation trophy.

Most recently, they spent the weekend playing at the South San ISD tournament, placing fourth overall and winning consolation in the Gold Bracket.

During pool play on Friday, the Lady Lions placed first with victories over St. Anthony, at (25-22), (21-25) and (26-24), and YWLA, (25-11) and (25-17) before defeating Southside (27-25) and (25-15) to advance to the Gold Bracket to face Clemens.

In their first match of the Gold Bracket play, the Lady Lions fell in three to Clemens, but later rebounded to take Jay, (27-25) and (25-23).

Junior setter and outside hitter Alex Howard was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

The Lady Lions hosted Bastrop on Tuesday, Aug. 27, and will perform over the weekend in the San Marcos Varsity Tournament. They will return home to the Lion’s Den on Tuesday, Sept. 3 to take on the Lee Volunteers.

District play starts on Sept. 13 as the Lady Lions travel to Kyle to take on the Lehman Lady Lobos.
