CORPUS CHRISTI — Two Lockhart Lady Lions, freshman Reina Del Castillo and sophomore Adriana Rodriguez, competed at the Region IV 5A meet held at Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi.

At 10 a.m. when the guns fired, the race got off to a very fast start as runners jockeyed for prime position. After the first 800 meters, Del Castillo position was in the 80’s with Rodriguez in the 140’s. Carefully maneuvering helped both ladies move up as the stronger runners pushed the pace the first two miles. With about a mile left in the 3.1-mile race, Del Castillo moved up to about 50th and Rodriguez pressing to get into the low 60’s.

With 800 meters to go, Del Castillo gave it one last kick and ultimately finished 39th overall with a time of 20:26. Rodriguez continued to battle the main pack and finished 90th overall with a time of 21:37.

“These ladies represented Lockhart wonderfully today,” Lockhart Head Girls Coach Reuben Ortiz said. “The night before we talked about what it takes to have a chance to go to state. They knew 10 seconds could easily mean jumping up 15 spots or falling behind 15 spots and the importance of running through the line. They both out-leaned opposing runners at the line which shows the fight in them. I’m also proud that Reina finished in the mix for one of last individual state spots and Adriana finishing in the top 50 percent. After looking at the overall girl results, it was pretty safe to say that our district was the second toughest district in the region. Our girls’ team would of finished in the top 20 as well if given the chance to compete. We are not walking away with our heads down. Our team will continue to train and recruit new runners to get stronger and of course be ready for the upcoming track season.”

The Lockhart Lady Lions competed on Oct. 27 for a chance to compete at the Region IV 5A state meet held at Round Rock. Only the top three teams from each district and the top 10 individual runners were given the opportunity to go to Regional. There were no bi-district, area, or multiple rounds.
