Lion Junior Varsity, Freshman teams challenge opponents

Junior varsity vs. Leander
The Lockhart Lions” junior varsity basketball team opened its season against Leander on Tuesday, Nov. 15, with a slow start to find themselves down 7-16 after one period.
The Lions heated up in the second period to outscore Leander 18-12 to go into halftime down 25-28.
The Lions came out the third period to outscore Leander by one

point. Going into the fourth period down by two, the Lions were in a fight to the end.
The game went back and forth but in the end Leander came out on top with a 48-42 victory.
Scoring for the Lions were Calvin Johnson with 10 points, Johnathan Gonzales with seven points, Jimmy Bowen with six points,Ryan Carcasco with six points, Michael Harvey with four points, Clayton Parker with three points, Jeremy Hill with three points, and Jeremiah Johnson with three points.

Lion Pride Classic Tournament
Next on the junior varsity team”s schedule was the Lion Pride Classic Tournament lasting Thursday, Nov. 17, through Saturday, Nov. 19.
The Lions played Converse Wagner in the first round of play. The very talented and quick Wagner team outmatched the Lions.
After one period of play, the Lions were down 6-21. At half the Lions found themselves down 10-47 as Wagner doubled their score. The Lions improved in the second half as they doubled their score; however, it wasn”t enough as Wagner walked away with an 80-22 victory.
Scoring for the Lions were Calvin Johnson with six points, Jeremy Hill with five points, Johnathan Gonzales with four points, Jimmy Bowen with two points, Jeremiah Johnson with two points, and Jacob Kenzee with a free throw.
In the second round of play the Lions played Gonzales.
“This was a good match-up for the Lions,” said Coach Mark Brown.
After one period of play the Lions were down 9-10 with Calvin Johnson leading the way with six points.
In the second period Gonzales pulled ahead 25-19. The third period the Apaches extended their lead by one point to lead 37-30.
During the fourth period the Lions only allowed two points as they scored 17 points to come from behind and win the game 50-43.
Scoring for the Lions were Johnathan Gonzales with 25 points, Calvin Johnson with 10 points, Ryan Carrcaso with five points, Clayton Parker with four points, Jeremiah Johnson with four points, and Anthony Tovar with two points.
In the third game of the tournament the Lions matched up against Austin Lanier. After one period of play the Lions were down 11-18 with Jonathon Gonzales leading the way with five points and Calvin Johnson with four points.
In the second period the Lions had Clayton Parker and Calvin Johnson each score six points apiece to go into halftime down 23-36.
In the second half the Lions outscored Lanier by four points but came up short with a 53-62 defeat.
Scoring for the Lions were Calvin Johnson with 16 points, Jeremiah Johnson with 10 points, Johnathan Gonzales with 10 points, Clayton Parker with eight points, Anthony Tovar with three points, as well as Joseph Gonzales, Stephen Brumley, and Ray Carrcasco each scored two points apiece.

Junior Varsity vs. Hays
After leading after one period 16-12, the Lions” junior varsity team was out played by Hays for the next three periods, losing 33-65.
Hays” height difference gave them an advantage in the game.
Scoring for the Lions were Jeremiah Johnson with nine points, Joseph Gonzales with five points, Jeremy Hill with four points, Anthony Tovar with four points, Johnathan Gonzales with four points, Clayton Parker with three points, and Caesar Martinez with two points.

Junior Varsity vs. Austin Travis
Tuesday night before the Thanksgiving holidays, the junior varsity basketball team was looking to win its second game of the year. But Austin Travis wouldn”t give the Lions an early Thanksgiving victory.
After one period of play the Lions found themselves down 13-18. At half, the Rebels increased their lead by 12 points.
In the second half, the Lions made several runs but came up short 45-60.
Scoring for the Lions were Jeremiah Johnson with 16 points, Anthony Tovar with 12 points, Johnathan Gonzales with nine points, as well as Col Cotton, Stephen Brumley, and Jeremy Hill with 2 points each.

Freshmen “Maroon” Team
The Lions” freshman “maroon” team hosted Hays at home for a victorious game, 31-30, on Monday, Nov. 21.
Jason Sanders scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Lions to victory.
Lockhart met Austin Travis on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the Lions” Den resulting in a loss, 48-38.
TJ Terrazas led the Lions with 13 points, while Adam
Renteria pitched in with seven points.
The Lions” record is 3-3 after playing Austin Travis.

Freshmen “White” Team
The Lions” freshman “white” team matched up against Hays on Monday, Nov. 21, for a close scoring game resulting in a victory, 38-37.
The Lions outscored Hays 15-4 in the final period to earn the win.
Ricky Rodriguez hit the game-winning free throws with two seconds left in the game.
Lucas Heilman scored 14 points in the game and John Alvarez tacked on nine points.
The Lions connected on 10 of 11 free throws to give them the scoring advantage over Hays.
The Lions are currently 1-2 with their overall season record.
