It was “back to the drawing board” for the Varsity Lions (0-7, 0-3) after losing their seventh straight game in a tough match against the Rebels (5-3, 3-1) at Lion Stadium on Friday, Oct. 15. The Lions fell hard, being completely shut out with a final score of 31-0.

“We are definitely not satisfied with the result of the game,

but there were a lot of bright efforts,” Head Coach Robin Rapp said. “Overall, I felt our defense fought extremely hard for 48 minutes. Even though Hays put up a number of points, I felt like we made them earn every yard. We just did not execute well enough to maintain consistency on offense and that was the difference in the game.”

The first quarter began with the Lions kicking off to the Rebels. Hays took their first play of the game at their own 28-yard line. By 11:12, the Rebels had a first-and-10 at the 41. After penalty flags against Hays for illegal procedure, the Rebels continued to move the ball forward until they reached the Lions’ 16. With a first-and-10, the Rebels made their first touchdown of the night with 8:29 remaining. The extra point kick was good for a score of 7-0.

The Lions took over the ball at their own 40-yard line, only to punt it back to Hays after about a minute of possession. Hays returned the punt to the Lion 19, for a first-and-10 at 7:17. The Rebels fumbled on second-and-6 and the Lions recovered for a first down at the 18-yard line.

Penalty flags against Hays for being off sides gave the Lions first-and-5. The Lions made it to the 29-yard line with 5:41 remaining and eventually punted to the Rebels, who kept control of the ball ending the scoring for the quarter at 7-0.

The second quarter looked the same as the first. The Rebels controlled the ball and the game. Hays scored a field goal before ending the first half of play at 10-0.

The third quarter started with a Lion fumble on the kickoff. The fumble was good for a Hays first-and-10 at the Lion 38-yard line. The Rebels had reached the 15-yard line by 10:50 and scored their second touchdown by 9:21. The extra point kick was good for a score of 17-0. No further scoring occurred in the third.

The Rebels charged on in the fourth quarter, scoring another touchdown and extra point for a score of 24-0 with 8:51 remaining in the game. The Lions could not complete a pass and earned flags for a false start before handing the ball back to the Rebels.

Hays scored the final touchdown of the night with a short pass to the left side of the end zone at 4:14. The extra point kick was good for a final score of 31-0.

The Lockhart turned the ball over to Hays with two interceptions and the Rebels turned the ball over to the Lions with a fumble in the last two minutes of the game before Hays ran out the clock.

The Rebels took no prisoners. Lockhart finished with a total of 97 yards in the game, with only 16 of them rushing.

The Lions will travel to New Braunfels Canyon to face the Cougars on Friday, Oct. 22. Kick off at 7:30 p.m.
See you at the game.
