After completing the first 13 games of the season, the Lockhart Lions continued to display a strong performance in a doubleheader split March 8 at home, losing to Akins 10-2 before winning the nightcap, 7-2.

Lockhart is now 8-4-1 on the season heading into district play.

Junior right-hander Gage Deutsch leads the team with a .357 batting average and a .514 on-base percentage. Senior Jacob Whisenant follows closely with a .345 batting average, while Junior Ethan Mendez rounds out the top three at .314.

“We get big hits when we need big hits,” said Lockhart Head Coach San Juan Arias, “and the top 3 players are delivering just that.”

The Lions’ pitching staff has also been reliable.

“We’ve been doing a one-inning rotation and it’s working for us, and our pitchers are not stressed about being worn out and it gives us more depth in the pitching staff,” Arias said.

Lockhart kicked off district play on March 12 at the Hays Hawks. The Lions will return home on Wednesday, March 13 vs. Hays and against Leander Glenn on Tuesday, March 19.
