As the first round of district play wound down and the second round began, the Varsity Lions found their stride and delivered back-to-back crushing victories against the Lehman Lobos and the Manor Mustangs last week.

On April 6, the Lions hosted the Lobos and deftly defeated them 11-0.

The Lion offense was lead by catcher Brandon Martinez who went 3-3 with two

doubles and a homerun, and was capped off by a three-run walk-off homerun from centerfielder Brian Martinez.

But the story of the game was pitcher Ryan Hitter’s outstanding performance on the mound. He held Lehman scoreless for five innings and finished with a no-hitter.

On Friday, the Lions traveled to Manor to start Round Two against the Mustangs.

The Lions started slow, trailing 7-2 through the first four innings. In the fifth, the Lions’ bats exploded.

The Lions plated 10 runs in the fifth and another six in the sixth, all the while keeping the Mustangs from crossing the plate and finishing the night with an 18-7 victory.

According to Coach Gene Salazar, the player of the game was shortstop Erik Garcia, who went 2-3 with three runs scored and five RBIs.

This week, the Lions faced the San Marcos Rattlers at home on Tuesday, April 12, and will travel to Del Valle to take on the Cardinals on Friday, April 16.
