Lions drop district opener against Rebels, 49-17

The Lockhart Lion varsity football team traveled to Hays High School for their first district game to play the powerhouse Rebels on Friday, Sept. 29, resulting in a defeat for the Lions, 49-17.
The Rebels were ranked second in the district predictions before the season began, and they earned a 2-1 pre-district record before

playing Lockhart. The Lions” two-game winning streak came to an end against the Rebels.
Lockhart scored the first touchdown of the game behind the arm of senior quarterback Dustin Garza with a 25-yard pass to senior Alex Joseph. Senior David Moore finished the scoring drive by completing the extra-point kick.
Lockhart surprised the Rebel defense with their passing game. Garza scored Lockhart”s first passing touchdown of the season, and completed four of six passes to earn 95 yards.
The Lions” defense totaled sixty tackles against Hays, however; they couldn”t hold them in the second quarter as the Rebels scored four touchdowns giving them a 35-7 lead.
After the halftime break, the Lion pride persevered by holding the Rebels to one touchdown in the third quarter and one in the fourth.
Offensively, Lockhart continued to drive the ball down the field gaining a field goal by Moore in the third quarter and a 35-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter by senior Terrance Waldon.
The Lions suffered from six penalties in crucial moments of the game which lost them 35 total yards. The defeat gives Lockhart a 2-2 overall record and 0-1 district record.
Next, the Lions will face the New Braunfels Canyon Cougars on Friday, Oct. 6. The Cougars are currently undefeated with two shut-out wins against Kerrville Tivy and Schertz Steele. Canyon also earned victories against Pflugerville Hendrickson, 37-7, and Class 5-A San Marcos, 23-21.
