Lions fall 41-7 to top-seeded Alamo Heights Mules

An evenly matched first quarter defensive battle turned ugly on Friday night as the Lions were outgunned by the district-leading Alamo Heights Mules in San Antonio. Although the Lions were able to keep up with the home team at first, moving through the first quarter scoreless, and holding Heights to 14 points

in the first half, Lockhart was worn down little by little.

By the end of the evening, the Lions seemed nearly powerless to stop score after score from the Mules, who won 41-7. The loss puts the Lions at 5-3 for the season, with a 2-3 record in District 27-4A.

There were few offensive highlights on the evening, which included a 62-yard pass from Charles Ereaux to Marcos Rodriguez early in the second quarter that secured the Lions” position for their only touchdown, and the steady march to the endzone that was capped by a 1-yard push by Levi Mair.

On the defensive side of the football, the Lions worked hard and proved their mettle as one of the few teams this season who have been able to hold Alamo Heights scoreless in any given quarter of play.

“Our defense played exceptionally well,” Coach Paul Kilby said after the game. “We did struggle offensively.”

That struggle may get deeper as the Lions move into their final two games of the season, after quarterback Charles Ereaux suffered an injury during the final seconds of play on Friday night. Although coaches did not disclose the severity or nature of Ereaux”s injury, the senior was unable to stand on his own, and had to be carried from the field by coaches after the game.

While the team recovers both from their injuries and Friday night”s loss, they also prepare for their Homecoming Game on Friday night, where the Lions will face district underdogs the Lehman Lobos (1-7 [0-5]).

It would be easy to predict a Lion Homecoming victory over the Lobos, who have scored only 75 points this season, and who are nursing their wounds after a brutal 62-7 loss to Kerrville Tivy last week. Still, despite Lehman”s lackluster performance throughout the season, Kilby is taking nothing for granted.

After all, if the Lions win the next two games, they will have earned their first playoff bid under Kilby”s watch.

“It really doesn”t matter how we get it done, but we have to find a way to get it done these last two games,” he said. “If we don”t beat Lehman, we will be playing for pride in Week 10. If we beat Lehman, we will be playing for a trip to the playoffs in Week 10.”

Standing in their way, along with Lehman, are the Kerrville Tivy Antlers, who will host the Lions for the final game of the regular season on Nov. 9.

The Homecoming King, Queen and Court will be announced during halftime on Friday night at Lion Stadium, and the Lions will kick off against Lehman at 7:30 p.m.
