Wayne Walter’s 2021 book “Possum Tales,” has a fantastic, very gentle Halloween tale for youngsters and adults – chapter 4’s “Possum Sees a Ghost.”
It details of the adventures of Petronius possum and his childhood friend, Pepito the dog, whom he had not seem for some time.
The two scavenge for food in the neighborhood, all while the humans were dressed in masks and outfits and colors celebrating Halloween. Later, the humans try to awaken the spirits, paying homage to their deceased ancestors. Petronius wondered if he too could bring back, even if just for a fleeting moment, his mother and his sister.
Very insecure with his surroundings at first, Petronius later realized as he found his way back home, of the kindness and pleasant nature of most.
“I like this story in particular,” said Walther, who noted it was originally written for his granddaughter, who was 8 or 9 at the time. “She was visiting. I had looked out of our dining room window and there was a possum just walking along the back of the fence.”
It is a very good read, and the book has 10 chapters in all of heartwarming stories from Lockhart’s Walther.
