Raymond Alton Blackwell, Jr.
Raymond Alton Blackwell, Jr., 74, of Lockhart, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006. He was born on Sept. 26, 1931 in Lockhart to Raymond A. Blackwell and Gertrude Williams Blackwell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Joe Dan Blackwell and Sam Mack Blackwell.
Mr. Blackwell is survived by his wife, Nancy Blackwell of Lockhart; son, Ray Alan Bla
ckwell and wife Janet of Bastrop; daughter, Amy Lynn Schunemeyer Purdy and husband Jon of New Iberia, La.; grandchildren, Jillian, Hilary, Kyle Blackwell and Sarah Schunemeyer.
R.A. was a Baptist; a former member of Grace United Protestant Church in Park Forest, Ill.; a graduate of Lockhart High School class of 1950; and a graduate of Texas A & M class of 1954 with a degree in Animal Husbandry.
He married Nancy Ruth Alexander on Aug. 8, 1954 in Lockhart. He served in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant, then went on to work as assistant county agent for Cleburne County; he retired from Swift and Co., working from 1957 to 1988. He was an Eagle Scout and Boy Scout Master and a Little League Baseball Coach. Once retired, he returned to Lockhart and his ranch. His life loves were his wife Nancy, children, grandchildren, the “Aggies,” and his cows.
Visitation was held at 6 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 26 at McCurdy Funeral Home. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27 at McCurdy Memorial Chapel. Interment followed at the Lockhart City Cemetery, with Rev. Robert Hahn, officiating.
Pallbearers in attendance were be Tom Blackwell, David Blackwell, Doug Field, Rick Vees, Dan Williams and John Williams. Honorary pallbearers were John M. Cardwell, Fred A. Hinnenkamp, T.B. Field, Jr., Scott Georgi and “The Poker Club.”
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society.
