Rita Louise Lightsey, a beloved aunt, devoted wife, and cherished friend to many, passed away on January 12, 2026, in Austin, Texas. She was 84 years old.

Born on November 9, 1941, in McMahan, Texas to Judson Owen and Lovena Baker. Raised on a farm, she carried the strength and spirit of her rural upbringing throughout her life. Her journey took her through many roles—farm girl, model, nurse, homemaker, and dancer—each one reflecting her vibrant personality and boundless energy.

Rita made South Austin her home for more than half of her life. There, she became a fixture in the community—a woman known for her warmth, humor, and unmistakable Texas charm. Whether sharing a snippety joke or one of her favorite Texas colloquialisms, she had a way of lighting up every room she entered. Her sense of humor was unmatched; those who knew her often said she had the best laugh and the kindest heart.

A lover of country music and dancing, Rita found joy in rhythm and movement. She also had a deep appreciation for art and nature. Her favorite tree was the crepe myrtle—its colorful blooms perhaps reminding her of life’s beauty—and she delighted in watching birds and squirrels from her window. Football Sundays were sacred in Rita’s home; as a passionate UT Longhorns fan, she cheered with unwavering enthusiasm.

Rita’s legacy is one of compassion and connection. She was a humanitarian at heart—always pleasant and sweet—and extended kindness to everyone she met. Her presence brought comfort to friends and family alike.

She will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege to know her.

May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
