William McDavid died peacefully in Berkeley on Nov. 14, 2010, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

William was born in Lockhart, Texas, on May 18, 1937, the third of seven children born to Allen and Doris McDavid. After graduating from Paul Quinn College in Waco, he moved to California to begin a career in public service.

He had a long, fulfilling career with t

he City of Oakland Parks and Recreation Department. He enjoyed serving the West Oakland community for over 30 years at DeFremery Recreation Center. During that time he completed a Masters program in Public Administration at C.S.U., was a leader in Local Union SEIU and received recognition as a Community Treasure as the recipient of the Koshland Award.

William leaves behind a large and loving family, including Eileen, his wife of 41 years; five children: Linda Williams, of Texas, Vickie McDavid, of San Pedro, Calif., Melanie Harris, of Tracy, Calif., Chris McDavid, of San Francisco, and Katie Epps, of Richmond, Calif. He also leaves behind six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, Shirley McDavid, of Oakland; two brothers, Charles and James, of Texas; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A private memorial was held for William on Nov. 18, 2010. In lieu of flowers, a charitable contribution can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
