Zulema Antoinette Watkins Munk, 95, better known by her family and friends as “Annie,” died peacefully at her home in Fentress on May 15, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel “Dan” E. Munk, her parents, Milton Marvin Watkins and Nettie Eastwood Woodward Watkins, and three brothers, Chester, Milton “Sonny,” and Jack.

Annie is survived by one brot

her, James “BeBe” Watkins, of Marysville, California, and many nieces and nephews from the Watkins and Munk families.

Born on June 15, 1918, Annie lived most of her life in or near Fentress, except for a brief time in Bishop and Victoria, where she worked during World War II as an original “Rosie the Riveter.” She was a graduate of San Marcos High School.

As a lifelong member of the Fentress United Methodist Church, Annie served in many capacities, including church treasurer and Sunday school teacher. She was also one of the first members of the Fentress Volunteer Fire Department. For the past seven years, Annie was Queen of the Fentress Fall Festival, and rode elegantly in the Festival Parade. At the time of her death, Annie was the oldest member of the church and likely, the oldest resident in Fentress.

Annie married Daniel E. Munk on Nov. 5, 1948. Together they shared their love of gardening and growing plants and flowers. Having no children of her own, Annie served as an adoptive grandmother to Rosemary and John Kimball. She was a loving aunt to her many nieces and nephews.

Annie loved cooking, sewing, painting, gardening, bird watching and growing flowers and potted plants. She made endless batches of cookies and birthday cakes for her family and friends and prepared their favorite foods, especially her brownies. She canned numerous vegetables from the abundant yields of her garden and always enjoyed and delighted at growing and eating homegrown tomatoes!

Annie and Dan loved fishing and hunting doves together and they shared the duties of farming and raising cattle on their two farms near Fentress. As an avid sports fan, Annie loved watching her Spurs, the Lady Longhorns, and the New York Yankees. On her last night, she had watched the Spurs win and enjoyed eating a bowl of chocolate ice cream.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Annie Munk on Monday, May 19, 2014, in Fentress at the Fentress Community United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 1 – 2 p.m. and the Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at the Fentress Community Cemetery. Rev. Barbara Dyke will conduct the services. Rev. Walter Hoke will deliver the funeral message.

She was a lovely, sweet, helpful, talented woman! I loved her so much. I used to sit next to her in church and (we were so bad) we would whisper to each other during the sermon. I will really hate knowing that I’ll never see her, again. She was, to Patsy, as Annie Laurie was to me. My heartfelt sorrow to Patsy for her loss.
