Arlene Conley, 90, went home to be with her Lord on June 16, 2009. She passed away in Austin, Texas, at the West Oaks Healthcare Center.

Arlene was born on Nov. 23, 1918, in Luling to George Lawler and Amy Johnson Lawler. On April 24, 1937 she married Miles DeWitt “M.D.” Conley, and they were married 61 years at the time of his death in 1998.

She is surviv

ed by her two children, Linda Fogle and husband, Jimmie, of Lockhart, and Derel Conley and wife, Beverly, of Austin. So precious to her heart were her four grandsons: Doug Fogle and Dwain Fogle, of Lockhart, and Chris Conley and Matt Conley and wife, Diana, of Austin. She was also recently blessed with her first great-grandson, Daniel Conley, of Austin.

Arlene joined First Lockhart Baptist Church in 1939 where she and M.D. served faithfully until her health declined. She was active in both the Women’s Missionary Union and in various areas of the Sunday School Department. For many years, she and M.D. were the Youth Leaders for the church and are still remembered today by many of the earlier youth members of the church for the many summer church camps that were spent at Alto Frio Baptist Encampment in the Texas Hill Country. She remained devoted to her church and was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class.

She and M.D. moved to Dallas, Texas, during World War II where they both worked at North American Aviation. They returned to Lockhart in 1945, where Arlene remained a resident until her death. As a loving mother and grandmother throughout her life, Arlene was a homemaker to her family and a companion and helper to her husband. She never missed an activity that her children were involved in, and throughout her life, she assisted M.D. in various endeavors including an upholstery business, a multi-phased chicken and egg business, a construction company, and the establishing of Store and Lock Self-Storage in Lockhart during the 1970s.

Visitation was held at McCurdy Funeral home in Lockhart from 6 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2009. A celebration of Arlene Conley’s life was held at McCurdy Memorial Chapel on Friday June 19, 2009 at 10 a.m. with the Reverend Rick Smith of Santa Fe, Texas officiating.
