Derryl Blake Hickman was born Aug. 12, 1936 in Alva, Okla. to Dora and Claude Hickman on the hottest day in Oklahoma history. An avid salesman and business owner, Derryl passed away Wednesday Nov. 29, 2006.
Derryl was raised on a wheat farm in Oklahoma and loved the business of farming and loved all his animals. Derryl left Alva and moved to Austin where he met the lov

e of his life on a blind date and were married Oct. 20, 1961. They recently celebrated their 45th anniversary. Derryl was a travelling salesman selling cleaning supplies throughout the Hill Country. He was very motivated to be successful because he “had to buy milk to feed his babies.” He and his wife would later purchase the Survival Haus and ran the business together until they retired two years ago and moved to Colleyville, Texas. He enjoyed playing dominoes, especially with his brother and grandchildren. He enjoyed all sports especially those Cowboys and enjoyed talking about sports to anybody that would listen. There wasn”t a Longhorns, OU, Cowboys, Rangers, Spurs or Mavericks game that would slip by. He had a great personality and had a wonderful way of making us laugh. He loved to play basketball and was a star player at Lambert High School and Northwestern University. He later would enjoy participating in the Boys Club to help under-privileged children. He enjoyed scratching off Lotto tickets as much as he loved shopping at Goodwill and then sharing all those great deals.
He was a warm and kind man, with always a joke or funny story to tell and will be greatly missed by all that had the pleasure of meeting him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother James.
He is survived by his wife Joan and their children, sons Jonathan and wife Hope, and Drew; daughters Laurie, Gail, Kamala and her husband Richard Perez; and 13 grandchildren.
Services for Derryl were held Monday Dec. 4, 2006 beginning with a 10 a.m. visitation followed by an 11 a.m. funeral service in the Eeds Funeral Chapel. His memory may be honored by a gift to the Salvation Army or any children”s charity.
