Husband, father, grandfather, and patriot.

Joe Fischer, Jr. was born in the Elm Grove farming community on Aug. 18, 1923, and graduated from Elm Grove Community School. Joe enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served in North Africa, participated in the invasion of Sicily, and then in the Normandy invasion. He fought in a Sherman Tank named “Brooks” until the end of the war then

returned home and married his long time sweetheart Natalene McKean on July 8, 1946.

Joe was a professional firefighter with the Ft Sam Houston Fire Department; he was injured in the line of duty he retired in 1975. He was a loving husband, caring father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and a role model for everyone who knew him.

Joe was a member of the First Lockhart Baptist Church and the American Legion. He led by example; he always kept his word, worked hard, and never had a bad word for anyone, unless the Astros or Cowboys lost.

His memory will be cherished, and his family will miss him greatly. He left this life on March 2, 2012.

Joe is survived by his wife, Natalene; his son, Wayne and daughter-in-law, Babette; granddaughters, Kimberly Henderson and husband, Mike, and Lyndse Evenson; grandsons, David Barker and Colin Fischer; great-grandsons, Blake Barker and Thomas Evenson; and great-granddaughters, Bonnie Fischer and soon-to-arrive Abigail Fischer.

He was preceded in death by parents, Honce and Cora; brothers, Morgan and Arnold; sister, Crystal McKean; son, Greg; and daughter, Pam.

Family received friends at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at McCurdy Funeral Home, with a Celebration service following at 11 a.m. Interment followed at the Lockhart City Cemetery, Lockhart, Texas.

    My prayers are with you and your family in this time of sadness….I know that your father will be missed…Just know that he is now one of God’s angels, watching over the family that is still here on Earth until you will be reunited one day…God bless you and your family.
