Marshall Monroe, III
Lt. Col. Marshall Monroe, III USAR (Ret.), 89, passed away Sept. 1, 2015 at his home in Columbus, N.C.
He was born in Houston, Texas, the son of Marshall Monroe, Jr. and Elsie Mueller Monroe.
Marshall graduated from the University of Texas in Austin, and served in the U.S. Army, WWII, Texas Army National Guard, and Army reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.

all recognized early in his career that he wanted to be in the action and to make a leadership difference and was able to do this in executive positions with four significant non-profit organizations in America: the United Way of America as VP for Program Development, the Boy Scouts of America as Assistant Chief Scout Executive, the YMCA of the USA as Director of Corporate Planning and Financial Development, and Chairman of the Board of the National Society of Fundraising Executives (now AFP).
Marshall served as President of the Stuart and Margaret L. Forbes Foundation, Chairman of the Polk County Community Foundation, Vice Chairman of St. Luke’s Hospital Board, and Polk County Vision Committee.
Surviving is his dear and loving wife, Bernardine; two daughters, Mona Lee and Linda, both of Lockhart, Texas; a stepson, Kenneth Dombrowski (Charlotte) of Ringoes, N.J.; a special family friend, Ina Pollock; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held at McFarland Funeral Chapel on Friday, Sept. 4, 2015, from 5 – 6:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Roger Arnsparger officiating.
A military burial followed at Polk Memorial Gardens.
