City plans hazardous waste pickup

The City of Lockhart will hold its annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007.
The annual event, which is funded in part through Federal grants and co-sponsored by the City of Lockhart, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Capital Area Council of Governments, is designed to allow residents a safe and cost-effective way

to dispose of chemicals that are not otherwise allowable in routine trash disposal.
According to Lockhart City Manager Vance Rodgers, it is normally illegal to dispose of such items with regular household garbage because of the potential dangers to the carriers, as well as the possible environmental harm that could be caused by improper disposal. He said the City of Lockhart will work with Lockhart residents to safely dispose of hazardous household wastes in an environmentally sensitive fashion.
Chemicals and household wastes that will be accepted during the collection include: drain cleaners, concentrates, oven cleaners, solvents, polishers, household batteries, latex and oil-based paints, spray paints, thinners and strippers, spray and dust pesticides, rat and insect poisons, and automotive products such as brake fluid, transmission fluid and batteries.
However, wastes generated by businesses and commercial farming, tires, chemical containers larger than five gallons, medical wastes, sharps, compressed gas cylinders, ammunition or gun powder, metal and wires will not be accepted.
The Household Hazardous Waste Collection is open to all residents of the City of Lockhart, but only to city residents. Participants will be expected to show a utility bill or other proof of residence before being allowed to dispose of their household wastes.
The collection will be held on Saturday, Jan. 27 from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine, in the west parking lot of Lockhart City Hall.
