Lady Lions begin exciting district season

After a loss to the Canyon Cougarettes and a victory over the Lehman Lady Lobos, the Varsity Volleyball team’s overall record now stands at 15-11 with their district record at 1-3.
The Lady Lions lost to the Canyon Cougarettes on Tuesday, Sept. 11 with scores of 19-25, 8-25 and 15-25. The Lady Lions then traveled to Lehman H
igh School on Friday, Sept. 14 to beat the Lady Lobos on their court with scores of 25-19, 25-15 and 25-23.
“New uniforms were a boost to the Lady Lions on Friday night,” Head Volleyball Coach Melinda Kirst said. “We got district going on a winning note. The Lady Lions stood up and played district leaders with a fight and are still in the hunt.”
The Varsity has been playing well and their stats are proof of that. The stat leaders for the Lady Lions are Kelly Witte with 319 kills, 329 assists, 102 blocks and 137 digs; Jessica Guerra with 49 aces and 341 assists; Camille Burrhus-Clay with 144 kills and 53 blocks; Jenee Burrhus-Clay with 138 kills and 66 blocks; Mariah Carter with 42 kills; Shelby Henrichs with 97 digs; Brianna Henninkamp with 34 aces and 211 digs; Janie Juarez with 18 aces; Ashley Moore with 41 aces and 138 digs; Meredith Moore with 28 kills; Natalie Raemsch with 88 kills and 89 blocks; and Cecilya Smith with 77 kills and 24 blocks.
“The team is playing with great heart and we are looking forward to the rest of district play,” Kirst said.
The next home game on Friday, Sept. 21 has changed to 5 p.m. for Freshmen, 5 p.m. for JV and 6:15 p.m. for Varsity.
