After raising concerns last month about placement in the Lockhart Pride School, the LISD Board of Trustees agreed on Tuesday evening to make an exception to the rules previously enacted by the Board.
During their last meeting on Sept. 24, the trustees voted to only allow students between the ages of 16-21 to enroll in Pr
ide High School. At that time, a number of 15-year-old students were on campus, but no provisions were made to transition those students back to traditional campuses.
“We wound up having to send six students back to those campuses,” Interim Assistant Superintendent for Information and Operations Janie Wright said on Tuesday evening. Wright also acts as the district’s Director of Curriculum and Programs and Special Instruction, and was the first principal of Pride High School.
“Five of those six students are succeeding at the LHS Freshman Campus,” she said. “The other one, who was a Katrina victim and still suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, wasn’t doing well.”
Wright said the student was the only one for whom administration planned to request a waiver.
“They said that they wanted to stick to the original rules of the program,” she said. “And the other students that we had to send back are doing fine. We were just worried about this one, and for the Board, it was really a ‘no brainer.’”
The Trustees agreed to grant the waiver within a matter of moments.
In other business, the Board engaged in lengthy executive discussion regarding filling two positions at Lockhart High School. After nearly two hours of executive session, they announced that Peggy Hoffman will join the staff at Lockhart High School as an Assistant Principal, and that Joanna Bagley has been named Choir Director.
The next regular meeting of the LISD Board of Trustees will be on Monday, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lockhart High School Conference Center.
